Suzuki GSX-R1000

The GSX-R1000 is a super bike from suzuki's gsx r-series of motorcycle. It was introduced in 2001 to replace the gsx r1000 and is powered by a liquid cooled 999 cc(61.0 cu in) inline four cylinder 4-strock engine.
In 2006, Suzuki revealed a significantly updated GS X-R1000 for 2007 at the Paris motor show. To counter this significant weight increase, Suzuki claimed improved aerodynamics. Although not a completely new model, the engine and chassis have been updated. It also featured three different engine mapping configurations, selectable via a three-position handlebar switch; standard, sport, and 'wet'. Pricing has been quoted at 11,399 dollars. The 2007 model carried over to 2008 without any significant improvements. MSRP increased to us $11,499.

competition in the hyper sport bike segment increased with the release of motorcycles like the BMW k1200s. The engine size was increased to 1340 cc (81.7 cu in) with the compression ratio increasing to 12.5:1. The revised engine has a claimed 12% increase in power to 194 hp (145 kW).Fuel is now fed through a pair of new 44 mm (1.7 in) Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) throttle bodies. The BMW S1000RR:

he 2009 Superbike World Championship is going to be spectacular. BMW is finally in the game with a big literbike, and they should make for an interesting season. This being their first year, I really don’t think they’ll be in contention, but they’ll probably finish well and up the level of competition with the rest of the crowd.

Either way, the most exciting part of BMW entering the race will be the production S1000RR. People have been looking forward to this bike since BMW announced it’ll be entering Superbike. Although, according to BMW Motorrad CEO Hendrik von Kuenheim, there will be only 1,000 S1000RRs built in 2009, meaning they’ll be impossible to find. Plus you know they’re getting snatched up by money men and celebrities first. Check out pictures of the official race version and production version:

No word on the price yet, but considering the high level technology in the S1000RR, it’s got to be up in the high teens at the least, I would say even more, but they’re going to at least try to compete with the Japanese.

Only good can come from this. It’ll be a fun to watch season, and the production S1000RR will spice up the whole pack of production literbikes. Competition is a beautiful thing, and BMW does it well in their automotive scene; they make quality driver’s cars. The 3 Series is a Car and Driver’s 10Best mainstay, even the big sedans have real zip; and anything with an M badge is just perfection. So it’ll be nice to see them compete on two-wheels with something other than big touring and heavy enduro bikes. And, according the von Kuenheim, the S1000RR will only be the first of several new ‘S’ supersport models, all of which will be designed specifically to compete with the Japanese sportbikes. Very, very awesome.

Yamaha FZ16 : The True Street Bike

August 10th, 2009. I rode my hero Honda pleasure (as for the past 3 years) in roads of Trichur, always feeling struck with envy when watching the other guys zooming by on their Pulsars, Apaches, CBZs and Unicorns. I came across a parking slot and next to me was parked a muscular bike. I knew this was the most talked about Yamaha FZ 16 and I was having a close up view for the first time, having only seen the bike in showrooms and the net. As I didn’t know how to ride a geared bike, I dared not go into the showroom and ask for a test ride.

September 10th, 2009. I was riding a new blazing black FZ 16 on the same street watching other people (guys and gals) who use to ignore me, giving a slight look at the bike. And for someone who is used to being ignored by others for the past 3 years, on road; getting noticed was great. I took a deep breath and sat erect and rode the bike (like riding an elephant).

Enough of dramatics, I have been a proud owner of this bike for the past 1 month. It took me 2.5 years to convince my parents to buy me a bike and finally when it was the right time, I knew I had to buy the best bike in the category. I am a student and have to travel around 24km daily (that too in 10-15minutes) , so a 150cc bike was essential. I had zeroed on the Honda unicorn, Hero Honda hunk and the suzuki gs15or. I first went to Honda. They simply seemed bored and replied to my inquiry that the bike would take 50 days in booking, no discount (It was onam season). Their cold attitude had just lost them one potential customer.

Next, went to Hero Honda. They offered the limited edition Hunk (wine red) for rs.62,300 on road. Since this was the cheapest and Hunk seemed to be a good bike (I then decided to book it.) I had canceled the Suzuki GS150R, not because it was bad but because it didn’t have anything new. No striking looks, but a good bike all the same. But on the day, I was to buy the hunk; I went by impulse to the Yamaha showroom. There the FZ 16 and FZ-S stood there receiving me. I was told that there was a discount of Rs.3000 for students. So the on-road price came to Rs.69,300. (My budget was 70,000 ). After hearing the advantages and disadvantages and its comparison to other bikes, I decided that this would be my first bike. I got the bike on the same day of cash payment.

Now the problem was to learn bike riding. I am an expert driver in cars and keeping that in mind I sat on the FZ and started the bike. My first start and ride on my first bike! It took me just 2km to be a pro in riding the FZ. That is the bike. It gives confidence even to starters. Now, after the first service, I have completed 700km. So initially, here were some of the “assumptions” I had on the bike.

  • No kick start. If the starter fails, you have to push and drag and start (like cars.)
  • The bike looks like a toy.
  • Lesser weight, hence lesser control.
  • The digital instruments is dull
  • The back seat is just a virtual thing. A pillion cannot ride for long.

Based on these and my personal experience, I shall write. My review won’t be technical. I shall use my knowledge and explain my views.

Engine and Performance: When the pulsar was introduced first in 2001, it was applauded as a technically brilliant and an advanced-bike-for-its-class. That was one of the reasons it became an instant hit. In 2008, Yamaha has repeated the same. The FZ is just one step ahead of its competitors and we have obtained a true performance bike in the 150cc group. The bike uses a SOHC , air-cooled 153cc engine. The maximum power is 14bhp and torque is 13.6Nm (Even if these were not the characteristics, I would have bought it anyway). When you sit on the bike and start it, the sporty riding position instills in you a feeling of pride. The position is excellent, just like the Unicorn and GS150R. You can ride straight for one hour, without any strain. Hence backpain is absolutely nil. The handlebars are wide which offer a comfortable position.

The bike starts just 2 seconds on pressing the starter. On mornings, I use the choke, as it is recommended for long engine life. Speaking on the absence of a kick start. Suppose you bought a new car. Are you worried that the car won’t start. There will be no starting problem atleast for the first 2 years. Since cars don’t have kickstart, the same thing applies to bikes. A well maintained battery lasts upto 1.5-2 years. Sports bikes like R1 , Hayabusa and the new P180 & P220 also come with self-starters only. You must sense that since the bike starts with self, the companies shall place an extra emphasis on the battery.

The bike starts with a pleasant sound, not silent like the Unicorn and not loud like the Apache and Pulsar. The sound is like something is waiting in the engine for you to unleash. The gear is one down, 4 up. There is no chance for false neutral and for neutral; you have to shift down to 1st and then shift up. The gear is of toe type, which looks sporty and all the same, may cause discomfort to those wearing sandals. The bike handles like a cruiser bike and is not rough like its brother the R15.

The bike is designed to provide low-end torque, meaning performance in low speeds. The power flow is smooth and takes just 5.5 seconds for 0-50km. I shift the gears at 4000rpm. The gears were initially a bit hard, but after the 1st service, this has become smooth. The power, though not the best, is ideal especially for riding the cities. In my opinion, this is the best bike to have when you ride mostly in a busy city. Till 0-70kmph, the ride is smooth and refined (not super refined like unicorn). Well, 150cc bikes should be a bit rough. (When a bike is extra smooth, it’s meant for ladies). You should have some feeling of control over the bike. The bike can be used to overtake extensively, with confidence, as the delta frame and lesser weight results in more stability and control. The gear ratios are excellent, and meant for city. You can ride in 5th gear at 20kmph without engine knocking. This means lesser shifting of gears. I ride mostly in the 50-55 speed, and it is the ideal speed for the bike.

Braking is good. The disc brake makes you feel really safer but the back brake could have been disc. The drum brakes are a bit loose. Anyway I use the front and back brake together, it is the best braking mode, for any bike and makes you stop right where you want to. The exhaust is trendy and the bike is somewhere between silent, and rugged. I have gone till 80kmphr. But after 75kmph, the vibrations start kicking in (At higher speeds, you won’t even know.) The maximum speed is touted to be at 115-120km/hr. It takes the highways for proper testing. Anyway the optimum speed is 3500rpm at 45-50kmphr.

Honda V4 Concept

Honda Motor Europe Ltd. exhibited the World Premiere V4 Concept Model at Intermot Cologne. The V4 Concept Model proposes a new, sensual design direction based on Honda’s trademark 4-cylinder V- engine.

This year Honda celebrates its 60th anniversary as a company and next year the 50th anniversary of its participation in road racing, as well as the 30th anniversary of racing with an innovative 4-cylinder V-engine with oval pistons. Considering these milestones, Honda chose “The New Beginning” as its exhibition theme leading into 2009 and exhibited the V4 Concept Model which signifies the beginning of a new era.

For Intermot, Honda collected and exhibited successive V4 race machines as well as mass-market motorcycle products which were developed by feeding back the technologies cultivated through participation in challenging race competition, enabling visitors to review the lineage of 30 years of V4 engine technologies and see how Honda will take motorcycling somewhere it has not been before. The exhibition also offers an easy-to-understand introduction to various challenges Honda has undertaken in order to create joy for its customers, by utilizing its technologies that have been continuously advanced through Honda’s 60-year history and by its participation in motorsports.

Honda understands the global trend today that motorcycle users see increasing value in more emotional and sensual performance during the real world riding experience rather than absolute performance measured in numeric specifications. On another front, user friendly features that meet with human sensibilities are also becoming important along with safety and environmental features, especially in mature markets.

Honda believes that the challenge to create attractive products with an increased focus on sensual performance will be the key for the future. At the same time, safety and environmental technologies as well as future energy technologies will continue to become an important theme for the development of motorcycle products. Moreover, in order to offer a comfortable life with motorcycles for a larger number of customers, Honda will put increased focus on the human-fitting match of rider and machine. Conceived around the trademark 4-cylinder V-engine, the V4 Concept Model expresses functional beauty as well as a more sensual image to appeal more to the emotions of people. Embodying Honda’s passion for motorcycle development, the V4 Concept Model expresses the unique characteristics of Honda for a new era.

The V4 Concept Model mobilizes the driving forces of Honda – dreams, challenges, and creating new value. Honda positions this model as “the new beginning” of Honda’s motorcycles.

Yamaha MT01 – Only For Rich Jerks!

Yamaha India launched the MT01 motivated by the government’s announcement for permitting to import bikes with capacity bigger than 800 cc. Yamaha got the 1670 cc MT01 that has the potential of giving a torque that could go up to 150.3 Nm at 3750 rpm. Now where are you? Off? Settle down. Power or looks? You can’t say which is the attractive point of the new Yamaha MT-01. It contents the heart with its truly macho looks.

need I find Yamaha MT01 as a bike that has a combination of style, power and comfort and it seemed to be as a bike worth waiting. You can go bonkers over the bike while riding on the highway with full release of the throttle. Let me be honest, it is the utmost reality for majority bike lovers. While bike lovers awaited for the bike with bated breath, competitors waited with skepticism to see how Yamaha MT-01 will look like and it is sure going to be love at first sight for anyone.

Looks: Yamaha MT01 is not a bike but an aggressively designed and styled rocket (c’mon to have a 1700cc engine packaged in a bike is not all that joke), but Yamaha could unleash a grunt close to 2k and it scares one and all with its looks and grunts equalling a beast on the road. The bike seems to be massive and heavy but CF die-cast technology offers less weight to the bike and makes it easy to manoeuvre the beast. Although looks wise its big enough to appeal, it’s indeed narrow enough to cut through the traffic without too much of a hassle.

What ca

tches everyone’s immediate attention, is the two big exhausts that resemble like cannons or rocket launchers almost extending up to the end of the rear seat. The headlight is designed in the traditional way but it is a multi-reflector 51/55-watt headlight that is quite powerful. The dash panel is stylish with 3D effect analogue tachometer.

he bike features radial tyres that are tubeless and has 4 spoke lightweight mag wheels. The digital speedometer shows in well-lit panel. The bike has disc brakes and twin exhaust pipes are slung upward that makes them look like rocket launchers. The MT 01 also features 43 mm inverted forks, low-slung rear shock, radial-mounted callipers and shows off aluminium sport-derived chassis with a truss swing arm similar to the R1.

Yamaha MT01 feels like a sports bike with almost a blowing effect of the back-blast when given full throttle. The bike is all-engine vehicle and the testimony is the thunderous torque. The five-brake system is more than sufficient and overtaking is amazingly effortless. Performance wise, you get what you expect from a V twin 1670cc engine. Initial couple of kilometres will look challenging but then it takes you off to a road of pleasure if you get used to the astonishingly loud noise it makes.

The MT 01 is priced at whopping 10.5 lakhs and is available in three colours: Lava Red, Competition White and Midnight Black. The overall performance of the Yamaha MT01 keeps up to the expectations of a powerful engine and will be one of the dream come true bikes of a bike enthusiast. The bike is very comfortable and is appealing in terms of aesthetics’ too. It might have been exuberantly priced but the owner won’t repent one bit. Even if the bike sports the conventional pipes the bike maintains to look the best. Yamaha MT01 for sure is a head turner so go lay your hands if you get an opportunity to test drive it, and if you are one rich jerk and can afford an MT01: Man! I envy you a lot.
